HEAD INJURIES
Head injury can cause damage to the scalp, skull or brain. The injury can occur from falls or accidents. In many cases the episode is minor and settles spontaneously with full recovery; however the condition can be severe and even life-threatening. This is general advice from the GP doctor in the surgery or clinic.
The head injury can cause cuts which bleed and bruises which appear quickly.
The concern is over the trauma causing possible damage inside the head with the risk of brain damage needing emergency treatment.
Symptoms and sihgns may occur soon after the head injury, or possibilly hours or days later.
The “head injury advice card” from casualty departments include the following advice:
If the patient develops any of the following, take him/her to the nearest hospital immediately:
• headache
• nausea (feeling sick)
• vomiting
• blurred or double vision
• slurred speech
• dizziness
• fits
• confusion or drowsiness
• loss of consciousness or coma
• blood or clear fluid from the ears or nose
