ALLERGIES & NUTS IN THE NEWS
Nut allergy is in the "news" again this week, this was research that has been ongoing for sometime. Many hospitals with allergy departments are now successfully desensitising to pollens, dust mite, pets etc in specialist practice with good success and now research is looking at whether this approach can work with foods.
Now the team at Addenbrookes are using the protocol of a US team (who started about a year ago) to do a randomised study to see it is a safe and effective approach. Researchers in Cambridge have launched the largest-ever trial to find a cure for peanut allergies. There have been some nasty reactions and this is some way from being ready to do in the clinic but we are all watching closely.
The £1 million government-funded study follows earlier research indicating the allergy can be overcome by gradually building up tolerance using small amounts of peanut protein. The trial has been funded by the Department of Health and will involve over 100 seven- to 17-year-olds.
