SUITCASE-SIZED ANAESTHETIC MACHINE FOR USE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
Dr Roger Eltringham, a consultant anesthetist from Gloucester Royal Hospital has come up a concept for an anesthetic machine that would work in the developing world. Together with Robert Neighbour Managing director of the company Diamedica, based near Barnstaple, they designed and manufactured hospital equipment specifically for countries facing poverty.
With Mr Neighbor’s engineering background his company Diamedica came up with an anesthetic machine that creates its own oxygen from the atmosphere for example and can be operated without electricity. The Glostavent machine has now been supplied to hospitals in 30 different countries — including 20 in Africa and others such as the Ukraine, Tasmania and in Canada for training purposes.
Diamedica have yet to come across a machine that they have not been able to fix via phone or e-mails with workers at the hospital. The company, which has been running since 2004, aims to provide between 50 and 200 machines per year.
