Adapted from John Boyne's best-selling novel, ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ is a fictional story told through the eyes of an eight year old boy largely shielded from the reality of World War II. This unforgettable tale follows a forbidden friendship that forms between Bruno, the son of a Nazi commandant, and Shmuel, a Jewish boy held captive in a concentration camp. Though the two are separated physically by a barbed-wire fence, their friendship grows and their lives become inescapably intertwined.

An exceptionally moving adaptation of the book, well crafted and emotional. Although not necessarily entirely accurate historically, the depiction of the Holocaust has been done in such a way that this film may serve to attract & educate many viewers from the wider community that otherwsie would not have seen a film about this subject.

Some may feel uncomfortable that you find yourself routing for the main character, the son of the commandant for the concentration camp, but I think the story is a clever way of opening up this subject and making it accessible to many who may never have understood the holocaust before.

Overall I would strongly advise you to see this film. As far as whether this film is appropriate for your 12 year old or under, that has to be your choice especially with this sort of subject matter. But the film is not overly graphic or shows too much violence everything has been filmed in a way to suggest what is going on rather than show the actual graphic nature of what happened.
